8 Fabric Patterns We Should Know

The differences between fabrics are like apples and pears. Much like calling boat shoes brogues, describing windowpane as ‘big checks’, or seersucker ‘striped with creases’ is enough to have you laughed out of any store.

As a result, it’s important to possess a sartorial vernacular sufficient enough to drop these key fabric patterns into play at ease.

  1. Gingham

Gingham is a success story in itself, having endured association with school uniforms, picnic blankets and tablecloths to remain one of the most popular spring/summer fabrics, particularly on shirts. Many countries claim to have come up with the plain-woven fabric, which makes use of alternating checks (dyed in the yarn), traditionally consisting of white and a colour.

  1. Tartan

Tartan, or ‘plaid’ in the states, was once the everyday garb of the Scottish Highlander. The name comes from the Gaelic word ‘breacan’, meaning chequered. As such, its appearance, which has gained international popularity since it began to be exported in the 16th century, features interlocking horizontal and vertical stripes in multiple colours.

Traditionally the pattern was found on kilts made from wool, but today appears on everything from clothing to accessories, which will help bring a heritage feel to any ensemble.

  1. Seersucker

When it comes to summer, it’s time to pucker up. Because of the slightly scrunched nature of this cotton fabric, it is held away from the skin, aiding air circulation and making it instantly cooler in every way.

The subtle, textured stripes usually appear in variations of white and a single colour and are most common on tailoring, shirts and shorts.

  1. Herringbone

The distinctive chevron pattern of Herringbone is created during the weaving process, when the diagonal direction of the twill is reversed at regular intervals. While the size and visibility of the pattern can vary widely, it’s generally one of the more understated motifs, making it one of the easiest to wear. Herringbone is most commonly found on blazers, coats, shirts and knitwear. 4. Pinstripe

Despite taking a beating in the nineties when it became the choice of flamboyant city workers in ill-fitting suits, the fabric is back on form, championed by the likes of Savile Row tailor Richard James, British menswear brand Hackett and Dutch retailer Suitsupply. Pinstripes, which refers to narrow, crisp lines running in parallel, have appeared on everyone from the New York Yankees baseball team to silver screen icon Clark Gable.

  1. Houndstooth

The pattern, which resembles a dog’s incisor, is made up of distinctive broken checks traditionally in black and white. Smaller scale versions are often referred to as puppytooth, but in any size the look carries a mean bark.

  1. Windowpane

Windowpane, much like pinstripe, fell out of favour until recently. Having waited quietly in the wings for its encore, the large rectangular ‘window-like’ pattern is back.

While the classic black/white combination never fails, colours represent an opportunity to be a bit more playful. Use the rest of your outfit and accessories to pick out either the base or box line hue.

  1. Birdseye

The cotton and linen blend features a series of very small, uniform spots, resulting in a textured pattern that looks like hundreds of bird’s eyes. Move over fish fingers, the real birdseye takes its form as this soft, lightweight and absorbent fabric. While that may sounds like something from an Alfred Hitchcock film, there’s no denying the style credentials.

Women’s Winter Fashion style

Women’s  Winter Fashion  style

      Everything winter  Everything women

“Over the years I have learned that what is important in a dress is the woman who is wearing it”. I think that this is

so true and have every intention of highlighting this idea through my fashion blog! While my own style is full of bright

colors, fun prints and the latest trends, this may not be your style. And that’s okay! Because most importantly, fashion

should be an expression of you!

Winter is waiting just around the corner, so this is definitely the right time to find your brand new coat to keep you warm, cosy and

stylish. Every year designer and high street brands launch some amazing pieces that we can hardly resist. But before you buy a coat you

should take into the account the style, shape and level of warmth you’re looking for, we’ve picked some of our favourite winter coats from

the new collection.

Give yourself a lift

No winter outfit in Paris is complete without an oversized scarf or pashmina, wool or cashmere are a great choice.

A chic coat is essential as you plan what to wear in Paris in winter. his time of year can get cold and windy, however the

temperature isn’t too unbearable; opt for a classic camel belted trench or popular pea coat to ensure you remain warm and toasty whilst

remaining super stylish.

Pretty Pinks for The Winters

Throw in a pop of colour for the winter months ahead, without being too loud! Pretty peach pinks or pinks in fuschia and baby soft tones are

okay to wear for work or for play! Match it up with polka dots or graphic prints for the top, and leggings or skinnies for the bottoms – be the

haute diva this winter!

. No matter what your shape and size, when styled correctly, this type of coat looks good on everyone

Keep the rest of your outfit fitted
Wear body-skimming pieces underneath to help balance the bountiful coat. Skinny jeans or leggings are great casual pairings, while a pencil

skirt or cigarette pants are dressier options.

 Show some skin
By this I mean pushing up your sleeves to bare your wrists and forearms and/or rolling the bottom of your pants to highlight your ankles.

Showing skin is a foolproof way to look more feminine and give yourself a taller, leaner appearance. When it gets colder, fitted gloves, tights,

or ankle booties will also do the trick.

I am absolutely loving this sweater poncho that I recently scored. I’ll admit that I haven’t shopped atWantDo fASHION in ages but I wandered in

on a whim recently and went a little sweater crazy. Their sweaters are on major sale right now so this is the perfect time to find those trendier pieces

for this fall and winter. Happy shopping!

a few sweaters, and even a t-shirt or two to wear underneath your heavy fitted jacket or warm coat.
